2027 Bencher Election

A regulator should be able to show its work.

CORE is a team running for bencher on four commitments: a focus on the Law Society’s core function, open and transparent decision-making, restored accountability and ethical leadership. The public deserves legal services from legal professionals who are the best and the brightest at what they do, and who are the most ethical.

The Law Society should do its job well.

CORE was formed because the Law Society is not focused on its core functions. Instead, it’s spending professional fees on studies rather than disciplining members acting in misconduct. The record already shows the cost: a licensee body facing one of the largest special levies in its history. The CORE team believes the Law Society has forgotten its core functions.

Why CORE

The need for change

A million-dollar pay scandal that Benchers wanted kept behind closed doors, a failure to hold Benchers responsible for it, feet dragging on disciplining lawyers, continued secret meetings, and decisions that will weaken lawyer representation at the LSO.

The LSO needs to regain the public’s confidence. These are the four principles we will be measured against.

C

Core Mandate

The Law Society should return to its essential responsibilities and remain focused on its core functions as a regulator.

O

Open and Transparent

Decision-making should be open, clearer to the profession, and easier to scrutinize. The LSO should provide transparent reasons for decisions and make documentation public.

R

Restore Accountability

The Law Society’s leadership should be answerable for decisions, conduct, spending, and results.

E

Ethical Leadership

Governance should be guided by integrity, professionalism, sound judgment, fiscal discipline and responsible stewardship.
